Photo: Ane Cecilie Kvernvik \/ Norwegian Polar Institute&nbsp;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In May, when air temperatures in Ny-\u00c5lesund, Svalbard, were still well under zero, the spring bloom was underway in the cold waters of Kongsfjorden. Researchers from the Norwegian Polar Institute and Alfred Wegener Institute were on site in the research community of Ny-\u00c5lesund to track the timing of the spring algae bloom.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_29045\" style=\"width: 633px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29045\" class=\"wp-image-29045 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/npolar.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/alge3-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"623\" height=\"468\" srcset=\"https:\/\/npolar.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/alge3-1.jpg 623w, https:\/\/npolar.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/alge3-1-450x338.jpg 450w, https:\/\/npolar.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/alge3-1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 623px) 100vw, 623px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-29045\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In sub-zero temperatures, the seawater of Kongsfjorden is teeming with phytoplankton cells beginning to multiply. The bloom is dominated by chain-forming diatoms of the genus <em>Thalassiosira<\/em> (in particular <em>T. hyalina<\/em> and some <em>T. antarctica var. borealis<\/em>).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On May 12, the researchers were out on <em>RV Teisten<\/em> taking water samples (in -8 <sup>o<\/sup>C air temperatures) and detected the beginning of the spring bloom at 20 m depth in the fjord. Water temperatures were still cold from winter (-1 to 0 <sup>o<\/sup>C), but phytoplankton, the millions of cells suspended in seawater that are like the plants of the sea, were happily dividing and growing in Kongsfjorden. This marks the beginning of the growing season for many animals in the fjord, dynamics which will be tracked by NPI researchers.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_29044\" style=\"width: 488px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29044\" class=\"wp-image-29044 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/npolar.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/alge1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"478\" height=\"406\" srcset=\"https:\/\/npolar.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/alge1.jpg 478w, https:\/\/npolar.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/alge1-450x382.jpg 450w, https:\/\/npolar.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/alge1-300x255.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 478px) 100vw, 478px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-29044\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fluorescence ( an indicator of chlorophyll concentrations and thus phytoplankton biomass) and temperature in the upper 100 m of Kongsfjorden, as measured on 5 May and 12 May, 2020.
