The present building <em>Sverdrup<\/em>, a modern 700&nbsp;m<sup>2<\/sup>&nbsp;building, was opened in 1999.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The institute has a permanent staff of five on site and operates permanent research programs and supports visiting scientists with established or new research activities in Ny-\u00c5lesund.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><br \/>\n<div  class='togglecontainer av-g6fhiv-66957b25a141be789389d88843a6a69f av-minimal-toggle  avia-builder-el-3  el_after_av_textblock  avia-builder-el-last  toggle_close_all' >\n<section class='av_toggle_section av-21arnt2-5754c7a440ad46a11c9348ae296193ab'  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div role=\"tablist\" class=\"single_toggle\" data-tags=\"{All} \"  ><p id='toggle-toggle-id-1' data-fake-id='#toggle-id-1' class='toggler  av-title-above '  itemprop=\"headline\"  role='tab' tabindex='0' aria-controls='toggle-id-1' data-slide-speed=\"200\" data-title=\"Research at Sverdrup\" data-title-open=\"\" data-aria_collapsed=\"Click to expand: Research at Sverdrup\" data-aria_expanded=\"Click to collapse: Research at Sverdrup\">Research at Sverdrup<span class=\"toggle_icon\"><span class=\"vert_icon\"><\/span><span class=\"hor_icon\"><\/span><\/span><\/p><div id='toggle-id-1' aria-labelledby='toggle-toggle-id-1' role='region' class='toggle_wrap  av-title-above'  ><div class='toggle_content invers-color '  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>The Norwegian Polar Institute is the primary research institute and host institute for several research and monitoring programmes in the Ny-\u00c5lesund area. The engineers at Sverdrup are responsible for daily service and operation of instruments, including measurement programmes owned by institutions from other countries.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The biological studies with the station as a base include monitoring programs on<a href=\"https:\/\/mosj.no\/en\/indikator\/fauna\/terrestrial-fauna\/svalbard-reindeer\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> reindeer<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/mosj.no\/en\/indikator\/fauna\/terrestrial-fauna\/arctic-fox\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">arctic fox<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/mosj.no\/en\/indikator\/fauna\/marine-fauna\/polar-bear\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">polar bear<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/mosj.no\/en\/indikator\/fauna\/marine-fauna\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">marine mammals and birds<\/a>. An important activity at the station is the effect studies of long-transported<a href=\"https:\/\/mosj.no\/en\/indikator\/influence\/pollution\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> pollutants on arctic birds and mammals<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mosj.no\/en\/indikator\/climate\/land\/mass-balance-for-glaciers-in-svalbard\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Glacier monitoring in the Ny-\u00c5lesund area<\/a> is another major activity at the station. Mass balance studies have been performed on several glaciers in the area, and the oldest records on mass balance are from 1967.<\/li>\n<li>The monitoring of landfast sea ice in Kongsfjorden started in 2003 and includes both <em>in-situ<\/em> measurements of ice properties and daily monitoring of the ice extent.<\/li>\n<li>Long term monitoring of meteorological data (since 1969) is continuously performed in Ny-\u00c5lesund (data available from <a href=\"http:\/\/seklima.met.no\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">seklima.met.no<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Daily observations of atmospheric ozone as well as filtered and weighted <a href=\"https:\/\/mosj.no\/en\/indikator\/climate\/atmosphere\/uv-in-ny-alesund\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UV-radiation<\/a> are performed with a number of instruments.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/npolar.no\/en\/zeppelin\/\">Zeppelin Observatory<\/a>, run by the Norwegian Polar Institute, is located on the nearby mountain ridge at the elevation of 475 m.a.s.l. The monitoring of incoming radiation, atmospheric trace gases, particle size distribution and radiative properties, together with other atmospheric parameters are conducted by several institutes, with Norwegian institute for Air Research (NILU), Stockholm University and&nbsp;the Norwegian Polar Institute being the main users.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>\n<section class='av_toggle_section av-neab2e-5e7b7a42698a5ddfec90527597fca9da'  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div role=\"tablist\" class=\"single_toggle\" data-tags=\"{All} \"  ><p id='toggle-toggle-id-2' data-fake-id='#toggle-id-2' class='toggler  av-title-above '  itemprop=\"headline\"  role='tab' tabindex='0' aria-controls='toggle-id-2' data-slide-speed=\"200\" data-title=\"Facilities\/services\" data-title-open=\"\" data-aria_collapsed=\"Click to expand: Facilities\/services\" data-aria_expanded=\"Click to collapse: Facilities\/services\">Facilities\/services<span class=\"toggle_icon\"><span class=\"vert_icon\"><\/span><span class=\"hor_icon\"><\/span><\/span><\/p><div id='toggle-id-2' aria-labelledby='toggle-toggle-id-2' role='region' class='toggle_wrap  av-title-above'  ><div class='toggle_content invers-color '  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>The Norwegian Polar Institute offers <strong>research facilities<\/strong> to visiting scientists: offices with phone and internet, guest computers, two small workshops for smaller electronical and mechanical repairs, a small guest lab with sink, workbench and refrigerator, a large roof platform for instruments, a library, and a lounge for meetings and social gatherings.<\/p>\n<p>The institute has an extensive and well-equipped logistics department offering<strong>&nbsp;logistical support <\/strong>like boats, snowmobiles and sledges, field equipment like tents, sleeping bags, primus, clothes, etc., and safety equipment. Scientists from nations not represented with own acticity in Ny-\u00c5lesund should come through Norwegian Polar Institute.<\/p>\n<p>Each present institution asses requests for their support. The assessment should include quality of research, compatibility with existing research in Ny-\u00c5lesund and competence and suitability of personnel. Adherence to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sysselmannen.no\/en\/laws-and-regulations\/\">Svalbard law<\/a> and environmental impact must also be considered. The RiS booking system handles bookings of transport (flight Longyearbyen\u2013Ny-\u00c5lesund), lodging, fright, storage and freezer, equipment\/support&nbsp; from stations, office, safety course \/ weapons* from Kings Bay, provisions, chemicals, marine laboratory and MS <em>Teisten<\/em> workboat).<\/p>\n<p>The research project must be registered in the RiS portal prior to booking services. Allow some days for the project to receive a RiS number.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.researchinsvalbard.no\/\">Book services through RiS<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>After initial booking in RiS, any additional details regarding equipment\/support from Sverdrup can be specified through e-mail to <a href=\"mailto:materialforvalter@npolar.no\">materialforvalter@npolar.no<\/a>. Available equipment can be found in the <a href=\"http:\/\/varekatalog.npolar.no\/varekatalog.pdf\">Polar Institute&#8217;s product catalogue<\/a>.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Norwegian Polar institute is also part of the My-\u00c5lesund Access Programme offered through the EU project INTERACT. <a href=\"https:\/\/eu-interact.org\/\">Learn more about INTERACT, how to apply, deadlines, etc.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>* Polar bears can be encountered in the surroundings of Ny-\u00c5lesund all year round. Scientists in the field are required to always carry a VHF radio and a rifle for safety. Due to legal restrictions, the Norwegian Polar Institute can only provide rifles to researchers employed by the institute. Other researchers need to rent rifles, and participate in the mandatory rifle training and safety course from Kings Bay. The NySMAC Secretariat is located at the Norwegian Polar Institute in Troms\u00f8.<\/p>\n<p>The science contributes to climate research programs and international networks, like<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcticobserving.org\/\"><span lang=\"en\">Sustaining&nbsp;Arctic&nbsp;Observing&nbsp;Networks&nbsp;(SAON)<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/community.wmo.int\/activity-areas\/gaw\">Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/globalcryospherewatch.org\/\"><span lang=\"en\">Global&nbsp;Cryosphere&nbsp;Watch (GCW)<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sios-svalbard.org\/\"><span lang=\"en\">Svalbard&nbsp;Integrated&nbsp;Arctic Earth&nbsp;Observing&nbsp;System (SIOS)<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ny-\u00c5lesund has a great potential for comparative bi-polar studies based on its broad measurement programs.
